Of course I’m doing NaNo this year. I always do NaNo and I always do the inevitable march toward brain death and then write an impossible number of words on the last day to make up for the days I
was really busy was lazy didn’t get any writing done wasn’t able to write. And then I’m useless for all of December and usually part of January – but I will never not do NaNo.
This year, I’m going to try something Earth-shattering.
I’m going to acknowledge ahead of time that some days, I’m not going to be able to write. I’ll figure out which days I know I won’t get any writing in – Thanksgiving, Black Friday, 2nd Thanksgiving (we host my husband’s family at our house the Saturday after Thanksgiving) – and see how many days I’m left with. Then I’m going to divide my 50000 words by that number of days. Actually, let’s just do this for real, shall we?
So, I’m missing the three days I just listed, plus there’s a day we’re taking a party bus to a hockey game and that’s an eight-hour affair, so by the time I factor in work the first half of the day, I’m not going to get any writing in that day, and let’s add in one spare just in case day. Five days I won’t be writing. Five. That’s almost 17% of the days in November. It’s even scarier when I look at it like that.
Numbers. Thirty days in November – five days I won’t write = 25 days left. 50000 words/25 days is 2000 words per day. I think that’s doable. I hope. I guess we’ll find out.
Hopefully knowing the exact number of words I need to get ahead each day will help mitigate the inevitable shortage…
One of the things I started doing about five years ago is doing a ‘JumpStart’ weekend with Laurel. She and I hole up and we write for 4 days – usually the first Thursday through Sunday of November. Some years we rent a cabin and take 8 other people with us – we cook all our meals at the cabin and between the ten of us, we write three NaNos worth of words. Some years, like this year, we rent a hotel room and host a write-in nearby to coincide with our JumpStart. If you’re local to Minnesota, watch for us to post write-in info to the blog. We’d love to see you there.
Who’s joining me for NaNo? What little tricks do you use to get you through the month?
If you want to friend me on the NaNo site, you can find me under SarahBella. I always friend back.
